India never lost its repair economy. The environmental arithmetic is equally direct. The majority of a device’s lifetime carbon footprint is incurred in manufacturing, before it is ever switched on. Extending average device life from three years toward six roughly halves the manufacturing footprint per year of use — a larger effect than most efficiency improvements, achieved with screwdrivers rather than breakthroughs. Repair is climate action disguised as thrift.
How to shop with repair in mind
For buyers, the checklist is short. Look up the repairability score from the official index or independent teardowns. Check the published price of the two parts most likely to need replacement — battery and screen — as a percentage of device price; under ten percent for a battery is healthy. Confirm the software support window in years, in writing. And ask whether independent repair is supported or punished — parts pairing that disables features after third-party repair is the practice to watch for and avoid rewarding.
The encouraging trend is that these questions increasingly answer themselves on the box. When repairability is scored, advertised and compared, manufacturers compete on it — and the device in your pocket quietly becomes something built to be kept, not discarded. For buyers, the power lies exactly where it always did: in checking the number before paying.
The habit that completes the loop
Buying repairable is half the practice; the other half is actually repairing, and the household economics deserve spelling out. A phone battery replacement at a fraction of a new phone’s price typically buys two further years of service; a laptop battery, keyboard or SSD swap routinely extends a machine past six years; and the repair market’s formalisation means genuine parts with warranties are increasingly the standard offer rather than the lucky find. The decision rule many practical households use: if the repair costs less than a third of replacement and the device otherwise meets your needs, repair — and bank the difference. When replacement genuinely is due, the repairable device pays a final dividend: it resells or hands down at meaningful value instead of joining a drawer of dead electronics. India generates e-waste at a pace collection systems cannot match, and the single most effective counter available to an ordinary household is unglamorous longevity: devices chosen for repairability, repaired when sensible, and retired years later than the marketing calendar intended.
